Body mass index and glucose variations during the night in free-ranging Artibeus planirostris (Chiroptera: Phyllostomidae) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Azeredo,Luane Maria Melo; Ximenes,Monique Silva; Pereira,Kleytone Alves; Fracasso,Maria Paula Aguiar; Lopez,Luiz Carlos Serramo.
ABSTRACT Body condition is an important measure to estimate the energy reserve of an organism. Scientists frequently use body condition indices (BCIs) with morphometric measures but direct measurements, such as blood glucose, seem to be more reliable. We observed oscillations in the body condition and glucose indexes of individuals of Artibeus planirostris (Spix, 1823) during 13 nights in the field. We assume that if glucose levels are proportional to feeding state and body condition is a measure of energy reserve, blood glucose and BCI should be positively correlated and both are expected to increase during the night as the bats leave their diurnal roost to feed. To test this, we examined the relationship between blood glucose levels, BCI and reproductive...

Body measurements and serum lipid profile of overweight adult dogs fed diet with containing conjugated linoleic acid Ciência Rural
Rivera,Nancy Lorena Montaño; Félix,Ananda Portela; Ferreira,Fabiano Montiani; Silva,Ana Vitória Fisher da; Maiorka,Alex.
Studies with human beings and animals have shown that dietary conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) promotes changes in body structure, markedly, body fat reduction. This research aimed to assess the effect of CLA (60% of conjugated linoleic acid methyl ester, at the proportion of 1:1 of the 9, 11: 10, 12 isomers) on changes in body weight, subcutaneous tissue thickness, body fat mass and concentration of serum lipids (triacylglycerols, total cholesterol, LDL and HDL) in overweight dogs. Dogs of different breeds weighting 16.85±7.13 assigned in a randomized assay. Two types of diets were offered for 120 days: control (-CLA) and test (+CLA, 0.3%). There was no difference between control and test groups considering body weight and serum levels of triacylglycerols,...

Condition corporelle et conséquences sur la plasticité des traits d’histoire de vie chez les petits pélagiques de Méditerranée ArchiMer
Brosset, Pablo.
Multiple changes have been described since 2008 in the Gulf of Lions ecosystem and particularly in small pelagic fish dynamic. In particular, the two main exploited species, i.e. anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) and sardine (Sardina pilchardus) are now smaller and in poor condition while a third species, the sprat (Sprattus sprattus) strongly increased in terms of biomass and abundance. This PhD thesis investigated these changes through the analysis of small pelagic fish body condition (i.e individual energy stores) variations, its causes and consequences. Anchovy and sardine body condition was optimal in 2005 and 2006 and decreased after 2008 to remain steady at low level since 2010. Moreover, older sardine have particularly displayed poor body condition...

Densité d'élevage chez la truite arc-en-ciel (Onchorynchus mykiss W.). Conséquences sur la qualité de la chair et l'état apparent ArchiMer
Sampietro Coloh, Sonia.
A triploid strain of rainbow trout (Onchorynchus mykiss) was reared in two experiments testing density effect on growth and flesh quality. Physiological index and corporal condition were also considered. Environmental  parameters were maintained identical between densities. Two fold 20, 50 and 80 Kg m·3 stocking densities were reared at 1.3% daily ration. No differences were found in fish growth neither in fish quality. A second experience compared two densities (50 and 110 kg m-3 ) and oxygen supplementation. Fish were fed ad libitum. Weight gain diminished at higher densities and oxygen supplementation had a favourable effect on fish growth. No differences were found in flesh quality parameters tested.

Determinism of Temporal Variability in Size at Maturation of Sardine Sardina pilchardus in the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Véron, Matthieu; Duhamel, Erwan; Bertignac, Michel; Pawlowski, Lionel; Huret, Martin; Baulier, Loic.
Age and size at maturation appear as key parameters governing the dynamics of a population as they affect growth rate, fecundity, and survival. The expression of such life history traits is determined by genetic make-up and modulated by environmental factors mainly through phenotypic plasticity. Moreover, fishing, besides decreasing population size and changing demographic composition can alter allelic frequencies through fisheries-induced evolution by selecting for some particular traits. In the Bay of Biscay, a decreasing trend in both sardine body condition and size-at-age has recently been pointed out at the population level. The Probabilistic Maturation Reaction Norm (PMRN) approach was applied to help disentangle phenotypic plasticity and genetic...

Effects of the weaning age of calves on somatic development and on reproductive performance of beef cows R. Bras. Zootec.
Vaz,Ricardo Zambarda; Lobato,José Fernando Piva.
This study evaluated body development and reproductive performance of beef cows whose calves were submitted to early weaning (76 days of age), or conventional weaning (148 days of age). It was used 141 Braford cows that calved in 2004, 2005, and 2006 to evaluate weight at calving at 76 days, weight at calving at 148 days, weight at the beginning and end of the breeding season, variation of the average daily weight, body condition, pregnancy rate, and calving interval. Dams of calves weaned at 148 days of age showed daily weight gain higher body weight and better body condition at 148 days of age. The weights at the end of breeding season and average weight gain during the breeding season were higher in early weaning cows than in conventional cows....

Evaluation of Three Mathematical Functions to Describe the Relationship Between Body Weight, Body Condition and Testicular Dimensions in Yankasa Sheep International Journal of Morphology
Yakubu,A; Musa-Azara,I. S.
Body size and testicular measurements have been found to be important parameters utilized in breeding soundness evaluation. The present study therefore, aimed at determining the relationship between body weight (BW), body condition score (BCS), testicular length (TL), testicular diameter (TD) and scrotal circumference (SC) in 120 extensively reared Yankasa rams (approximately 30 months old) using linear, quadratic and cubic predictive models. Coefficient of determination (R2), Adjusted R2, the estimate of Mallows' Cp, RMSE (Root mean squares error) and the parsimony principle (p=number of parameters) were used to compare the efficiency of the different models. Strong Pearson's correlation coefficients (r = 0.83-0.94; P<0.01) were found between BW, TL,...

The change of animal biometrics (body mass and body size) can reveal important information about their living environment as well as determine the survival potential and reproductive success of individuals and thus the persistence of populations. However, weighing individuals like marine turtles in the field presents important logistical difficulties. In this context, estimating body mass based on body size is a crucial issue. Furthermore, the determinants of the variability of the parameters for this relationship can provide information about the quality of the environment and the manner in which individuals exploit the available resources. This is of particular importance in young individuals which growth quality might be a determinant of adult fitness....

Food in the Sea: Size Also Matters for Pelagic Fish ArchiMer
Queiros, Quentin; Fromentin, Jean-marc; Gasset, Eric; Dutto, Gilbert; Huiban, Camille; Metral, Luisa; Leclerc, Lina; Schull, Quentin; Mckenzie, David; Saraux, Claire.
Small pelagic fish are key components of marine ecosystems and fisheries worldwide. Despite the absence of recruitment failure and overfishing, pelagic fisheries have been in crisis for a decade in the Western Mediterranean Sea because of a marked decline in sardine size and condition. This situation most probably results from bottom-up control and changes in the plankton community toward smaller plankton. To understand such an unusual phenomenon, we developed an original and innovative experimental approach investigating the mechanisms induced by a reduction in the quantity and size of sardine prey. While experimentations offer the unique opportunity to integrate behavior and ecophysiology in understanding key demographic processes, they remain rarely...

Food limitation and low-density populations of sympatric hamster species in North China Naturalis
Xiong, W.; Liang, H.; Yu, X.; Cong, L.; Zhang, Z..
Although food has been proposed as a possible factor on population regulation of small mammals, evidence of food restriction in field conditions is still lacking. Food restriction is generally thought to occur in high-density years of oscillating populations of small mammals. By using two body condition indices (muscle protein concentration and cleaned carcass index), we investigated variations of body condition of the greater long-tailed hamster (Tscherskia triton) and the striped hamster (Cricetulus barabensis) in the Raoyang County of the North China Plain during a population decline- and low-phase from 1998 to 2003. Our laboratory experiments showed that food restriction reduced muscle protein concentration and cleaned carcass index of greater...

Host-parasite interaction between crustaceans of six fish species from the Brazilian Amazon Biological Sciences
Vasconcelos, Huann Carllo Gentil; Tavares-Dias, Marcos.
Host-parasite interactions between crustaceans and six fish species (Psectrogaster falcata, Ageneiosus ucayalensis, Acestrorhynchus falcirostris, Hemiodus unimaculatus, Serrasalmus gibbus and Geophagus proximus) from a reservoir in eastern Amazon, northern Brazil, were investigated. Eight hundred and seventy-eight parasites belonging to three crustacean species, Excorallana berbicensis, Argulus chicomendesi and Ergasilus turucuyus, which parasitized the hosts’ mouth, gills and tegument, were collected from 295 fish and examined. High infestation levels were caused by E. berbicensis on the body surface of the hosts. Excorallana berbicensis showed aggregate dispersion, except in S. gibbus, while E. turucuyus showed random dispersion in A. falcirostris. The...

Impact of immunological state on eco-physiological variables in one of the southernmost lizards in the world Anais da ABC (AABC)
DURAN,FERNANDO; BORETTO,JORGELINA M.; FERNÁNDEZ,JIMENA B.; MOLINA,MORA IBÁÑEZ; MEDINA,MARLIN S.; IBARGÜENGOYTÍA,NORA R..
Abstract: The immune state is an essential component of survival as it directly influences physiological performance and health status. Variation in the leukocyte profile, a significantly increase in body temperature, and a detriment of the eco-physiological performance are among the possible consequences of an unhealthy state. In this study we analyse and discuss how field body temperature, preferred body temperature, the speed for sprint and long runs, locomotor stamina, and body condition can be affected by the immunological state (i.e. leukocyte profile) in a wild population of Liolaemus sarmentoi. Juveniles and adult males with a high percentage of eosinophils, basophils, and a low percentage of monocytes preferred higher body temperatures in a...
